Colorado families deserve affordable electricity bills – we don’t want to pick up the bill for yet another year of Xcel and Big Tech’s record profits. Fortunately, Colorado’s Public Utilities Commission (PUC) exists to protect Colorado consumers, like you and me, not utility CEOs and shareholders. 

But, they need to hear from us ASAP.

Right now, Xcel is asking the PUC to approve their plan for providing electricity to AI data centers coming to Colorado. That plan includes the potential for higher household energy bills, fast-tracked secret contracts with out-of-state tech companies, and more pollution.

Without statewide guardrails on large-scale data centers, they are already poised to spike our energy bills, guzzle up our drinking water, and increase air and noise pollution. How Xcel chooses to power these data centers can make those problems even worse.

Coloradans deserve better. 

We want a Colorado built by – and for – Coloradans and our communities for generations to come, not corporations that are only thinking about their quarterly profits.

Dear Commissioners,

We, the signatories of this petition, urge you to adopt a strong Large Load Tariff and Clean Transition Tariff for Xcel Energy that protect Colorado customers, communities, public health and natural resources from the costs and impacts of new large energy users, including data centers.

As you consider Xcel’s Large Load Tariff and Clean Transition Tariff, we ask you to:

  1. Make large energy users pay the full cost of new and existing infrastructure needed to serve them.

  2. Protect other Xcel customers from higher costs and financial risks associated with data center development.

  3. Make clean, renewable energy the fastest and simplest option for large energy users so that new electricity demand does not lead to more fossil fuel use, air pollution or negative health impacts.

  4. Ensure large energy users support Colorado’s climate goals by investing in clean, renewable energy and energy storage. Any generation added in support of new large loads must move Xcel Energy closer to its goal of becoming a net-zero energy provider by 2050. 

  5. Protect communities already disproportionately impacted by industrial air and noise pollution from the additional impacts of new large-load customers.

  6. Require transparency and reject Xcel’s proposal for secretive “speed to market” contracts that could allow them to make special deals with large customers instead of following new tariff rules.

Colorado customers should not have to pay the costs or take on the risks of Xcel serving large energy users, and our communities should not bear the burden of more pollution, fossil fuel use or pressure on already limited water supplies.

We urge you to put people before profits and adopt a strong Large Load Tariff and Clean Transition Tariff that protect Coloradans, make large energy users pay their fair share and ensure our energy future is clean, affordable and fair.
